Chapter 4. Installation

Configuring SCSI controller and internal disks
This option allows you to configure the SCSI Controller. Typically the only option
that would be changed is the RAID configuration. The internal LSI SCSI/RAID
controller can treat the internal disks in two different ways:
As two standalone disks
As two parts of a RAID-1 array
Both ways are supported for operating system installation, although installing on
the single non-redundant disk is not recommended.
RAID-1 is the only possible redundant configuration consisting of a single logical
drive spanning the two disks. There is no way to create multiple logical volumes
or hot spares.
Using the embedded LSI controller allows the content of the primary disk (the
disk marked as Primary in the Mirroring Properties menu) to stay intact. The
contents are copied to the secondary disk during the first synchronization. This
feature means that the installation of the operating system and the creation of the
mirror can normally be done in any order (see warning below).
The following steps describe the process of creating a RAID-1 array.
1. Select the Driver number for the SCSI Controller. The following screen will be
displayed (Figure 4-8 on page 104).
Warning: Even though it is possible to preserve the contents of the primary
disk after the mirror creation, this is only possible if the disk is not full. Full
means the whole disk is partitioned; it does not have to have any data. If the
disk is full then data cannot be saved and the contents of the primary disk will
be lost. We strongly recommend that you configure the RAID options before
the installation of the operating system.
