RS485 serial port 

The RS485 serial port provides an optically-isolated twisted-pair interface between 
multiple Hydro-View units and a host computer or master Hydro-View. 

Installation of RS485 module 

The RS485 interface is supplied on a plug-in module which must be inserted into the 
Hydro-View unit unless this was installed as a factory option…

  Remove the screws securing the lid of the Hydro-View. 

⇒

  Lift the lid off the unit to expose the circuit board. 

⇒

  Locate the RS485 module connector on the circuit board as shown in Figure 23 on 

page 59. 

⇒

  Plug the module into this connector - only one orientation is possible. 

⇒

  Refit the lid and screws. 

RS485 connections 

The Hydro-View implements RS485 using a two wire interface. This is shown in Figure 
32. 

 

Shielded twisted-pair cable is recommended for EMC purposes. The shield should be 
connected to ground at one end only to minimise capacitive coupling (the twisted pair 
cable will minimise magnetic coupling). 

RS485 termination 

Note that the twisted pair cable should be terminated at each end in a resistor equivalent 
to the characteristic impedance of the cable used - typically 100R/0.5W These are 
indicated by Rt in Figure 32. 

The RS485 module (shown in Figure 33) contains a termination resistor which may be 
placed in circuit by inserting jumper J3 on the relevant module(s). This should be done for 
those units at each end of the twisted pair.
