ADVANCED USER OPTIONS AND CONFIGURATION

RS232 usage
The RS232 port can be configured to operate in a number of different ways...
Disable
RS232 port is unused.
Data Log
The current moisture values are transmitted periodically, as determined
by the Data Log Rate parameter.
ASCII Hex
Provides two-way communication between the Hydro-View and another
system, using a simple ASCII Hex protocol.
Master
The port acts as a master device to another Hydro-View unit configured
for ASCII Hex on its RS232 port. See
Grouping channels
(p49) for further
details.
Batch Print
The port will print a report of the moisture variables each time the
Average/hold input is turned off, thus providing an end of batch report.
RS485
Watch
All information received by the RS485 port will be retransmitted on the
RS232 port. By connecting the RS232 port to a personal computer
running a terminal emulation program, it is possible to monitor what is
happening on the RS485 port for testing purposes.
Sensor
Trace
This will output the sensor voltage reading at a rate of 100 samples per
second. It is normally used to capture the signal wave-form from the
sensor for testing purposes. The value is output as a four digit
hexadecimal number where 0000 corresponds to 0.00V and 7FFF
corresponds to 12.00V.
RS485 usage
The optional RS485 serial port may be configured to operate in a similar way to the
RS232 port. However, the RS485 port allows multi-drop communication on a simple
twisted pair cable, permitting several moisture measurement channels to be interfaced
with a single communications port. Permitted options are...
Disable
RS485 port is unused
Data Log
The current moisture values are transmitted periodically, as determined
by the Data Log Rate parameter.
ASCII Hex
Provides two-way communication between the Hydro-View and another
system, using a simple ASCII Hex protocol.
Master
The port acts as a master device for a maximum of three additional
Hydro-View units configured for ASCII Hex on their RS485 ports. See
Grouping channels
(p49) for further details.
Batch Print
The port will print a report of the moisture variables each time the
Average/hold input is turned off, thus providing an end of batch report.
Some of these options can be selected at the same time as similar options on the RS232
port, although some combinations will not be logically correct in use - for example,
configuring both RS232 and RS485 ports as
Master
will produce undefined results.
Data log rate
Determines how often data is transmitted by a port configured for
Data Log
operation.
Station number
In a communications configuration involving the
ASCII Hex
communications protocol this
parameter sets the station number for this Hydro-View unit acting as a slave device.
Number of slaves
In a Master/Slave system (see
Grouping channels
(p49)) this parameter sets the
maximum number of slaves which will be used in the system. The Master station will then
only attempt to communicate with the number of slave units entered, avoiding wasting
communications time on slave units which are not present in the system.
