IOP Soft failures are grouped into two categories. IOP Box Soft failures are failures that affect all
slots/channels in the IOP. IOP Slot Soft failures are failures that affect one or more but not all
slots/channels in the IOP.
4.3 Fault Isolation Concepts
Introduction
The first step in fault isolation is to determine whether the fault exists in a field device, or in the High-
Performance Process Manager. After it has been determined that the fault is in the High-Performance
Process Manager, you can begin isolating the fault by using the information provided in this section.
Troubleshooting flowcharts
A flowchart to assist you in isolating off-process and on-process faults to specific High-Performance
Process Manager components is shown in Figure 180 through Figure 185. The flowcharts encourage the
following troubleshooting philosophy.

Use the flowchart to lead you through the available High-Performance Process Manager status and
alphanumeric displays so you can identify the type of fault and the associated error code. This is the
next step in fault isolation.

The flowchart will point you to a table in this section that lists and describes the error codes, along
with the recommended corrective action(s).

The recommended corrective action usually identifies the most likely cause of the error condition.
In some cases more than one corrective action is given. In these cases, the action listed first is the
most probable fix. The remaining actions should be attempted in sequence if the problem is not
resolved. If the fault is not eliminated by the recommended corrective action(s), then you should
pursue other causes, such as checking for faulty cabling, improper or faulty FTA connections,
improper system installation (especially power and grounding), and potential harmful transient
conditions, such as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) or Radio Frequency Interference (RFI).
