3B3-10 POWER STEERING COMPONENTS ■ TRW ROSS
33. Seal (37).
• Remove tape from the sector shaft.
• Pack the end of the housing trunnion area at
the sector shaft with clean high temperature
grease.
• Apply more grease to the seal (37) before
installing it.
;
34. Input shaft seal (4) with the spring side first using
J 37073 (figure 13).
• Apply clean grease to the seal.
35. Retaining ring (3) into the groove in the valve hous-
v ing.

36. Seal (2) over the input shaft.
• Pack the end of the valve housing bore with
Clean high tem perature grease (GM P/N
1051344).
• Apply some grease to the seal (2).
37. Grease fitting (33), if removed.
• Hold a piece of tubing that will clear the head of
the fitting over a new fitting and tap it into the
housing.
38. Automatic bleed hole plug (41), if removed.
Q Tighten
• Plug to 55 N-m (40 ft. lbs.).
39. Auxiliary port plug (44), if removed
O-rings.
$
Tighten
with new
• Plug to 41 N-m (30 ft. lbs.).
•A ll ports should be plugged until the unit is
installed in the vehicle.
ADJUSTMENT
0
Adjust
• Rotate the input shaft until the timing mark on the
end of the sector shaft is in line with the timing
mark on the end of the housing. •
Important
• Rotating the input shaft more that 1-1/2 revolu
tions from the center position without the gear
installed on the vehicle could make the auto
matic pbppets inoperative when the gear is
installed:. This would require: disassembly of the
a special service poppet adjusting screw kit and
manual adjustment procedures.
• Initial poppet contact will occur at less than one
input shaft rotation in one direction from the
. Steering gear center position if new or reset
.; 'poppet adjuster seat and sleeve assemblies are
assembled in the unit.
• With the adjusting screw nut (51). loose, turn the
sector shaft adjusting screw (47) clockwise to pro
vide 5.1 to 5.6 N-m (45 to 50 in. lbs.) to rotate the
input shaft through one half turn each side of cen
ter! (figure 13), This will properly mesh and seat the
rack piston and sector shaft teeth for final adjust
ments.
• Turn the sector shaft adjusting screw (47) counter-
\ clockwise one half turn and note the maximum
torque required to rotate the input shaft through
one half turn each side of center.
• Turn the sector shaft adjusting screw (47) clock
wise to increase the maximum torque above by
0.68 to 0.90 N-m (6 to 8 in. lbs.).Tighten the jam
nut firmly against the side.cover while holding the
adjusting screw in position. Final torque the jam nut
to 58 N-m (43 ft. lbs.) and check Input shaft torque
again. Readjust if input shaft torque exceeds 4.5
N-m (40 in. lbs.).
