•Remove the nut by placing a 5/16-inch hex

wrench in the end'of the shaft to hold it; Use a

wrench to remove the nut by turning it to the

left.

• If a hex wrench is not available, wrap the rotor

in a shop cloth. Then place the rotor (21) in a

vise and tighten only enough to permit removal

of the pulley nut (32).

5^ Drive end frame (26) from the rotor shaft. Use a

puller to remove the frame, if necessary.

6. Rotor from the vise.

7. Three retainer bolts (23).

9. Bearing (25) from the drive end frame.

A. Support the drive end frame from the inside on

, a metal tube with a slightly larger inside diame

ter than the outside diameter of the bearing. ’

B. Press the bearing from the drive end frame with

a metal tube against the bearing’s inner race.

INSPECTION AND REPAIR

CLEANING AND INSPECTION

§ 3 Clean

• All metal parts except the voltage regulator, rectifier

bridge, stator, rotor, and bearing assemblies in a

suitable solvent.

— Wipe or blow the parts dry.

Inspect

1. Brush holder.

2. Insulating sleeves on the brush holder retaining

screws.

3. Brushes. If the brushes are worn halfway or more,

replace the brush assembly.

4. Brush springs for discoloration or weakness.

5. Bearing seals. If the felt seal ip the drive end bear

ing retainer plate is hardened or looks worn,

replace the retainer assembly.

6. Bearings for grease.

— Refer to “Lubrication" for the type of lubricant to

use.

— If the slip ring end bearing grease supply is

used up, replace the bearing: Do not relubricate

the bearing.

7. Rotor and stator windings for burned or cracked

insulation. Check for broken wires or connectors.

Replace the rotor or stator if the wiring insulation is

burned or broken.
