3B3-6 POWER STEERING COMPONENTS - TRW ROSS
INSPECTION
| y | Inspect
• Rack piston teeth for cracks and wear.. If a step
can be detected by running a fingernail horizontally
across thes teeth surfaces, replace the rack piston,
sector shaft, and balls.
• Rack piston and worm assembly ball track grooves
for brinelling or spalling. If either condition exists,
replace the vi/orm, input shaft, valve, valve housing,
and rack piston.
•Sealing surfaces of the input shaft and valve for
nicks, steps* or heat discoloration. Replace the
input shaft, valve worm assembly and balls if nec
essary.
• Housing cylinder bore, (Lengthwise scoring marks
should be considered normal).
.
:!:
• Housing faces for nicks that would prevent proper
Sealing.N Replace the gear housing if these nicks
are present and can not be easily removed with a
fine-tooth flat file. Do not change the dimensional
characteristics.
• Roller bearing (35) in the housing for brinelling or
spalling. Replace the bearing as; necessary. A dam
aged side cover bushing will require replacement of
the side cover and bushing assembly. The side
cover and bushing assembly must be replaced if
sector shaft to side cover bushing clearance
exceeds 0.20 mm (0.008 inch).
• Sector shaft bearing and sealing areas and the
sector teeth contact surfaces for brinelling of spall
ing: Run a fingernail edge across these areas to
detect steps or cracks. Remove any masking tape
frorh the shaft serrations and inspect for twisted or
damaged serrations. Replace the Sector shaft if
necessary,
• Thrust bearing assembly (15) rollers for deteriora
tion.
• Thrust washers (12 and 16) for brinelling, spalling,
or cracks.
ASSEMBLY
NOTICE: When adding or making a complete
flu id ch an g e, alw ays use GM P art No.
10500179 (or equivalent meeting GM Spec.
No 9985010) power steering fluid. Failure to
use the proper fluid will cause seal damage
and fluid leaks. •
Important
• Lubricate all: seals and internal components with
"power steering fluid" Before assembly.
VALVE HOUSING AND INPUT SHAFT ASSEMBLY
■M-
Install or Connect (Figures 1 and 2)
Tools Required:
J 37070 Adjuster Tool
J 37464 Adjuster Jam Nut Tool
;
1: Valve housing in a vise so that the input shaft, can
be assembled vertically with the worm end up.
• The valve housing counterbore must be clean
of any foreign particles to ensure that the thrust
washer will be squarely seated when assem-
" s bled.
'
• Do not clamp against the threaded port hole :or
relief valve hole sealing faces When placing the
valve housing in a vise.
:!;|
2. O-ring (9) into its counterbore in the valve housing.
3. O-ring (11), and new seal (10), into the large diam
eter seal ring groove in the valve housing:
, 4. Roller thrust bearing (15), and then the thick thrust
washer (12), onto the input shaft end of the iHput
Shaft, valve, and worm assembly seating thefn
against the input shaft thrust face,
. ■
.5. Seal (8) onto the input shaft and against the thick
thrust washer to hold the bearing components in
place.
6. Input shaft end of the assembly into the valve
housing (5) until it js firmly seated.
• Dip the end of the input shaft, worm assembly
(14) and valve (56) into oil up to the worm lead.
7. Thrust bearing (15) followed by a thin thrust wash
er (16) over the ball groove end of the worm.
8. O-ring (9) into the seal groove in the bearing
adjuster (17).
9. New seal (8) into the same groove.
10. Bearing adjuster (17) over the worm and into the
valve housing.
• Be sure that the valve housing, adjuster jam nut
(18), and bearing adjuster (17) threads are
: clean and free of any staking burrs.
Tighten
• Bearing adjuster to 15 to 20 N-rin (11-15 ft. lbs.)
using J 37070 (figure 8).
• Back the bearing adjuster off 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
