• Piston rings (if necessary). If the rings are to be
reused, they must not be bent dr damaged.
•Connecting rod bearing inserts for scratches or
deep pitting.
Measure (Figures 25 and 26)
1. Piston pin diameter (figure 25). Check against
“Specifications.”
2. Piston pin to piston clearance.
A. Measure the piston pin hole diameter (figure
26).
'
B. Subtract the piston pin diameter from the piston
pin hole diameter to obtain the clearance.
C. Replace the piston and piston pin if the clear
ance exceeds 0.001 inch.
PISTON SELECTION
1. Check the used piston to cylinder bore clearance,
as follows:

R e m o v i n g t h e P i s t o n P i n
2. Connecting rod bearing inserts. If the inserts are to
be reused, place them in a rack so they may be
reinstalled in their original connecting rod and cap.
3. Piston pin (figure 24).
A. Place the piston/connecting rod on support fix
ture J 24086-20. Make sure the connecting rod
is fully supported.
B. Place remover J 24086-8 on the support fixture.

Piston.
— Remove all varnish and carbon deposits. DO
NOT USE A WIRE BRUSH.
— Remove the carbon from the ring grooves. Use
a ring groove cleaning tool.
— Oil control ring groove holes.
I n s p e c t
• Piston pin bore in the piston and connecting rod.
Check for scuffing, burrs, etc.
• Piston pin for scratches, wear, etc. '
• Connecting rod for cracks, nicks, etc. If a suitable
jig is available, check the connecting rod for bent
or twisted condition.
• Piston.,
— Ring land for cracking, wear, etc,
r— Ring grooves for burrs, nicks, etc.
— Skirts and pin bosses for cracking.
— Skirts for scuffing, (movement'of metal).

Measure (Figures 27, 28, and 29)
A. Cylinder bore diameter. Use a telescoping bore
gage, located 65 mm (2 1/2 inches) below the
top of the cylinder bore (figure 27).
B. Piston diameter. Measure the skirt at a right
angle to the piston pin hole and 1.24 inches
down from the bottom of the oil ring groove
(figures 26 and 28).
- -
C. Subtract the piston diameter from the Cylinder
bore diameter to determine piston to bore Clear
ance.
