12. Lever housing (48).
• Pry it away from the field frame.
13 Armature.
14. Retainer ring (40) and pinion stop (41) from the
armature shaft.
A. Slide a metal cylinder onto the armature shaft
and with a hammer, strike the metal cylinder
against the retainer ring.
B. Remove the snap ring from the groove in the
shaft using pliers. If the snap ring becomes dis
torted during removal, replace it (figure 12).

Important
• Check the field coil for grounds as described
under “Inspection and Repair” before removing
the coil from the frame. Grounds may not be
apparent after the field coil is removed.

INSPECTION AND REPAIR
Clean
• Wipe parts clean with a dry cloth.
• Do not clean the parts in a degreasing tank or with
grease dissolving solvents.
j.
Inspect
1. Arrnature bushing fit in the end frame, lever hous
ing, and nose housing;. If the bushings are worn,
replace them. Also replace the oil wicks When a
bushing is replaced.
•..Lubricate the' new oil wicks and bushings before
assembling the starter motor. Refer to “Lubrica
tion” later in this section.
• If the bushings do not look worn, the oil wicks
do not need to be lubricated.
• To remove an oil wick, make a small hole in the
oil cup and pry out the cup. Install a new wick
and a new oil cup.
.
2. Armature shaft for runout or scoring. Replace the
armature assembly if the condition of the armature
shaft is doubtful.
3. Commutator for runout.
• If the commutator is worn, dirty, out of round, or
has high insulation, lathe turn it until the com
mutator is true.
• Do not undercut commutators on these motors.
• Never use emery cloth to clean the commutator.
