Inspect
1. Contact disc (66), motor terminal (24), contact
surface, and “BAT" terminal contact surface for
wear.
• Replace if worn.
Models with Solenoid Shield:
1. Solenoid shield nuts (20) from the solenoid clamp
screws (54).
2. Shield (21) from the solenoid.
3. Motor jead attaching nut (52) and lead from the
solenoid.
4. Solenoid clamp attaching screws (54) and solenoid
(3) from the frame assembly (57).
DISASSEMBLY OF THE
SD-260 STARTER MOTOR
If the motor does not perform to specifications, it may
need to be disassembled for further testing of the com
ponents. Normally the starter motor should be disas
sembled only so far as is necessary to make repair or
replacement of parts. As a precaution, it is suggested
that safety glasses be worn When disassembling of
assembling the starter motor.
Before disassembly, perform the electrical tests oh
the solenoid described under “Inspection and Repair”
later in this section.
SOLENOID

Disassemble (Figure 11)
• Clean the outside of the starter housing, removing
grease, oil, mud, etc.
• Scribe marks to show the relationship of the drive
end frame, frame and field assembly, and the end
frame to aid in assembly.
FRAME AND FIELD ASSEMBLY
disassemble (Figure 11)
1. Through bolts (58) from the end frame (41).
2. End frame (41).
3. Brake washer (14) from the armature assembly (9).
4. Frame and field (57) assembly from the arma-
ture/drive end frame assembly.
DRIVE END FRAME ASSEMBLY
disassemble (Figure 11)

1. Plug (15) from the drive end frame assembly.
2. Armature (9) with the drive assembly (32), shift
leyer (1), plunger (2) and return spring (5) from the
djiveend frame (figure 12).
3. Return spring from the plunger.
4. plunger from the shift lever.
5. Shift lever (1) from the drive assembly by spread
ing the lever arms slightly to snap them off the
mating buttons on the drive collar.
