• Screws to 18 N-m (13 ft. lbs.).
Check the mounting nuts on the large solenoid “M”
and BAT terminals to make sure the. terminals are
secure.

• Nuts to 3.0 N-m (27 in. lbs.).
If a ground lead (67) is used between the solenoid
terminal and commutator end terminal on the the
starter (type 350 only), check the nut (60) on the
ground lead to solenoid ground terminal. Hold the
mounting nut (next to the cap) to keep it from turn
ing while tightening the outer terminal nut,

PINION CLEARANCE CHECK
To check pinion clearance, perform the following
steps.
1. Remove the “M” terminal nut and insulate the
motor winding connector from the “M” terminal
stud.
2. Make connections as shown in figure 20.
3. Momentarily flash a jumper lead from ground to
terminal “M” as shown in figure 20.
4. Push the pinion Or drive back toward the com
mutator^end to eliminateslack movement.
5. Measure clearance as shown if figure 21. Com
pare the reading to that given in “Specifica-
... tions” at the end of this section.
6
. Adjust the clearance by removing the plug and
turning the shaft nut.
