3 .1 About this Sec tion.
This section describes the installation of the field fitted serial output Option P1 and the adjustment of
the time and date on the factory fitted Option

3 .2 .1 General.
The serial board, option P1, provides simultaneous EIA RS-232C and EIA RS-422A outputs of the
data printed by the GS8920 Ticket Printer. This data is in ASCII format with carriage returns and line
feeds and may be directly connected to any serial input printer capable of printing up to 24 characters
wide.
The data is transmitted at the same time as the GS8920 generates a printout on its printer mechanism.
Since the data to be printed on the GS8920’s mechanism may be buffered with all the data sent first to
the remote printer, and since handshake lines and/or codes are not used, the remote printer must have a
buffer capable of receiving all of the data. The buffer size should be approximately 26 bytes/line,
which, if the contents of 50 registers are to be printed, could amount to approximately 300 lines or
1500bytes. A 2kbyte buffer, which is fairly common, should be adequate.
The data transmitted to the remote printer is identical to the data printed by the GS8920 Ticket Printer
except that enhanced characters are transmitted as normal characters, line justification is the same but
page justification does not apply, the printed order of some of the information may differ slightly.
Where enhanced characters are printed on the GS8920 the line justification of the serial output may
differ from that of the ticket.
