1 .7 .2 Status and Memory Checks.
When power is applied, in addition to all of the other status checks, the GS8920 verifies :-
i
. State of the battery supporting the memory which retains the accumulated weight data.
ii
. State of the memory by checking for corrupted data.
iii
. Presence of a remote printer serial output board Option P1.
iv
. State of the battery supporting the
BR2
Optional memory which retains the accumulated quantity
and price data.
If the battery supporting either RAM has failed the GS8920 displays the “Out of Paper” message and
when a ticket is installed prints a warning message which identifies the RAM chip that has failed. The
form of the message is :-
“WARNING the battery retaining the totals has FAILED. Data will be LOST. REPLACE RAM CHIP
U6 IMMEDIATELY.”
The battery and RAM in the basic GS8920 identified as U6 are one integral 8K * 8 non - volatile static
RAM chip Thomson model MK48Z08B - 20 having an expected life of 10 - 20 years when used in
the GS8920 Ticket Printer. Periodic replacement is therefore not required.
The Optional RAM U7 which retains the quantity and total price information and includes the
calendar/clock is a 2K * 8 non - volatile static RAM chip Thomson model MK48TO2B - 15 having an
expected life of 10 - 20 years when used in the GS8920 Ticket Printer. Periodic replacement is
therefore not required. Only the initial factory installation of Option BR2 will enable use of the chip
U7 and its calendar/clock. The chip may be field replaced but not field installed in the first instance. If
any of the memory locations which should contain ASCII values such as dates and material codes have
become corrupted then when they are printed the characters will be “
E
”s instead of the correct
characters.
1 .7 .3 Option P1 Serial Output Verification.
If a remote printer is connected to the GS8920 Ticket Printer but there is a fault in the Option P1
output board the message below will be
printed following insertion of a ticket at
the “Out of Paper” message. No further
output will occur to the remote printer and
service assistance will be required.
( “WARNING. Option P1 FAULT” )
1 .7 .4 Test Print at Power Up.
A test ticket printout can be obtained when
power is applied to the GS8920 Ticket
Printer by inserting a ticket prior to the
application of power and by holding the
key depressed as power is
applied.
