Starting the Calibrator
Press the Power button to start the Calibrator. The menu, shown below, defaults to the
VOLTAGE menu in the Control Display. You can press the first four keys to go directly
to the VOLTAGE, EDGE, LEVEL SINE, and MARKER calibration menus. Press the
MORE MODES key to view the other selections (also shown below), allowing access to
WAVEGEN, VIDEO, PULSE, MEAS Z (Impedance/Capacitance measurement), and
OVERLD (Overload) menus. Press the AUX INPUT key to put the 5820A into auxiliary
input mode. Press
î
to return to the VOLTAGE menu from the OTHER menu. This
chapter describes each of these menus in detail.

The Output Signal
The following description assumes that the Voltage mode is on. The Control Display
appears as follows:

The Control Display (the display on the right side) indicates the location of the output
signal. If you connected your Calibrator, but the output does not appear on the
oscilloscope, the Calibrator may be in standby mode. The Output Display (the display on
the left side) indicates settings for the output signal.
If SBY is displayed, press
l
. The Output Display shows OPR and the output should
appear on the oscilloscope.

Editing and Error Output Settings
Note
When you use the Edit mode, a new reference point must be available.
Because Voltage and Marker modes are the only two modes that create new
reference points, Edit works only in those two modes.
All 5820A Calibrator outputs can be edited using the front panel Edit Field knob and
associated
i
,
t
, and
É
keys. The difference between the original output
(reference) and edited output is displayed as an “error” between the two settings. This
allows you to edit a value to achieve a correct reading at the UUT and thereby calculate
an error in
±
% or ppm (parts per million) if it is less than
±
1000 ppm. Table 4-2 lists the
actions that cause the calibrator to exit the error mode and return to the original reference
output, or to output a new reference, as selected.
