6.1.2 Basic Knowledge
Before creating networks, you need to have some basic knowledge. Here we provide some basic knowledge in the
following sections for you.

Device and Network
A device is the most basic element in a network. It can be a PLC, a servo, a drive or any device that you defined. Here a
network is a collection of devices which are interconnected. Every communication port should be assigned with a network
type, such as Modbus, Ethernet, EtherCAT or CANOpen. A physical interface that a device uses to connect to a network
is a communication port of the device. If there are more than two ports on a device, the device can connect to different
networks.

Device Name
A device name is the identity of the device. You can identify a device in the Device Tree by its name. However it bears little
significance on operation.
