14.3 AMPS-1 Command Interface Specifications
The remote commands which control AMPS-1 are listed in Appendix A of this
operating manual. Remote commands comprise one, two, or three ASCII numerals
(character set '0' to '9'), terminated by the ASCII 'E' character. Carriage return, line feed,
and similar ASCII control characters

AMPS-1.
For remote control, the AMPS-1 must first be placed in "NUMERIC mode". This can
be done manually by the user, by pressing the SHIFT button on the front panel of
AMPS-1 prior to commencement of remote control operation. Alternatively, AMPS-1
can be switched from power-on default "ALPHA" mode to the "NUMERIC" mode by
sending an ASCII 'M' character to AMPS-1, prior to transmission of subsequent remote
control commands.

AMPS-1 has special requirements for remote control via RS-232. Characters sent to
AMPS-1 by a controlling device must be separated by a delay of at least two-tenths of a
second. In response to each character received by AMPS-1 via the RS-232 Port, AMPS-
1 will return a string of 22 characters to the sending device, which can be either
accepted or discarded depending on the desired application.
For example, considering the Coarse AFIB command listed above, the sending device
will require at least 0.8 seconds to send this message to AMPS-1, and AMPS-1 will
return four messages of 22 characters each to the sending device over the course of the
command transmission. After the first ASCII character '1' is sent, there needs to be a
0.2 second pause to allow the AMPS-1 to respond with a 22 character message. After
the pause, the second ASCII character '0' may be sent, etc. Sending the ASCII
character 'E' is equivalent to pressing the Enter key on the keypad.
