4.4 Defibrillator Training
4.4.1 Overview
The arrhythmia/AED menu provides interactive simulations in which AMPS-1 outputs
a fibrillation waveform that can then be "defibrillated" by selecting either DEFIB NOW
or DEFIB R-SYNC via the keypad. Alternatively, a defibrillator discharge can be
simulated by applying an external trigger signal to AMPS-1 via the "DEFIB IN" jack.
4.4.2 External Trigger Specifications
The trigger signal that may be applied to "DEFIB IN" of AMPS-1 is n o t a defibrillator
discharge, but is simply a low-level pulse signal that represents a synchronization pulse
from a defibrillator.
The trigger connects to rin g (signal) and s le e v e (ground) of the stereo "DEFIB IN"
jack. The trigger amplitude may range from 2.5 to 5.0 volts and the duration of the
pulse should be at least 5 milliseconds. Polarity of the trigger voltage may be positive or
negative with respect to "DEFIB IN" ground (sleeve).
A suitable trigger signal can be obtained by connecting the "WAVEFORM OUTPUT"
jack of the Datrend Phase 3 Defibrillator Analyzer to the "DEFIB IN" jack of AMPS-1
(tip connection at Phase 3, to ring connection at AMPS-1). Discharging a defibrillator
into Phase 3 will result in a pulse of appropriate amplitude at the WAVEFORM
OUTPUT, which will then trigger AMPS-1.
4.4.3 Scenario Descriptions
With two emergency scenarios and a cardioversion scenario, AMPS-1 can be used for
basic defibrillator training.
The "Emergency 1" scenario generates the following sequence of ECG rhythms:
• ten NSR beats at 80 BPM
• a PVC
• six NSR beats
• a second PVC
• continuous ventricular fibrillation thereafter, until "defibrillation" via AMPS-1
keypad or an external trigger signal at "DEFIB IN"
