Chapter 12: Ventilation operation
chilling younger animals. As animals get older and stronger, the system requires a lower bandwidth to
react faster to prevent the animals from overheating.
Animal age
Animal age is taken into account if variable CFM/hd and Bandwidth (settings on a curve) is selected in the
Power ventilation setup. If they are selected, the minimum ventilation settings and the Power bandwidth
are automatically adjusted according to age.
As animals get older, the house/barn temperature set point usually decreases, minimum ventilation
increases and bandwidth is reduced.
The minimum ventilation and bandwidth are calculated every hour, just like house/barn temperature set
point when following a curve.
Most of the time the first few stages, when the temperature range is close to the house/barn set point, are
of variable capacity because the ventilation response to temperature change has to be smooth to avoid
air drafts on the animals. As the house/barn temperature rises, and the temperature deviates more from
set point, the ventilation response can be coarser because the chilling factor is required to make the
animal feel comfortable.
Ventilation and temperature curve
The following figure illustrates the relationship between house/barn average temperature and ventilation
(in terms of CFM). Variable stages are represented by a box, and possible operation points within the box
are represented by the red line (temperature rising trend) and blue dotted lines (temperature decreasing
trend).
Stage capacities are calculated when fan assignation is completed in the Power ventilation setup. The
grey dotted line is the ventilation flow the system is trying to achieve using its equipment and stage fan
assignation.
Operating stages can differ with rising temperatures and decreasing temperatures as start, stop and max
temperature of all stages are set and can be manually edited in the ventilation grid.
In this example, the bandwidth is set to 10 °F when the generate grid function is activated in the ventila-
tion grid. The information following the figure details the effects of a change in the ventilation parameters.
NOTE:
On-Off stages have start and stop temperatures. Variable stages have start, stop, and maximum
temperatures
