AM LIMITERS MENU
10-Band Limiter
The AM‑10HD contains an extremely unique multiband limiter of a configu
‑
ration never before seen in any audio processor!
Not only is it a fully adjustable 10‑band AM final limiter, but its filter bank
is automatically recalculated as the AM low pass filter bandwidths are changed.
The purpose of this rather complex scheme is to ensure that there are always ten
bands of limiting in control of the audio
regardless
of what the AM bandwidth
setting may be.
When you think about it, as AM bandwidth is reduced, more help is needed
to maintain audio quality on a typical AM receiver, not less! So why do other
AM processors “throw away” bands as their output bandwidths are reduced? In
other words, an AM processor with “five bands of limiting” really has about two
and a half bands of limiting left whenever it is being operated at its narrowest
low pass filter setting!
Our ten band limiter algorithm is especially suited for controlling peak energy
without generating any of the unnatural artifacts that outdated and more simplistic
algorithms with fewer bands generate.
There is no caveat for using the 10‑band limiter other than it is
probably
inap‑
propriate for most program material to drive the limiters above 10dB of limiting
on a continuous basis.
Our recommendation is that the limiters be operated in a manner that allows
them to only take care of longer duration transients that the preceding five band
AGC/compressor intentionally misses. For best musicality we also recommend
that the limiters not be operated with extremely short attack and release times.
Please open several of our factory presets and observe the settings in the limiter
sections to see what we mean.
The 10‑band Limiter has been designed to be fully adjustable in order to ac‑
commodate a wide variety of program material and competitive needs. It also
contains our exclusive Vorsis Bass Management System (VBMS) embedded
within it to intelligently control bass without generating any unnecessary or
undesirable artifacts.
