23. Instrumentation and Automation
23.1
General
All engines are equipped with the Wärtsilä Engine Control Sys-
tem - WECS 2000. WECS is used for monitoring and control of
the engine. It is developed for use on the diesel engines and
designed for the harsh environment of the engine.
WECS automation system
The figure shows the layout of WECS on the six cylinder in-line
engine. The exact structure of the system, i.e. the number of
Distributed Control Units (DCU) (1) and Sensor Multiplexer
Units (SMU) (2), depends on the cylinder configuration. All
sensors on the engine are connected to the DCU’s and the SMU’s,
while the signals to and from the external system are connected
to the Main Control Unit (MCU) and the Relay Module (RM). The
engine parameters are shown on the Local Display Unit (LDU).
The WECS cabinet is flexibly mounted on the rubber elements at
the driving or free end of the engine depending on the installation
