If using the aluminum step wedge (which has an atomic number of 13), select an area of
interest. The average result should be 13. If the result is less than 12 (which is more than
5%) and repeat the calibration tests and save the results using the instructions at
7. Looking at the Atomic number readout, verify the settings are within 5% of the original
calibration results.
The original calibration results (or the results of the last calibration setup, normally the one
done at installation) should be in the XR3D log book.
Each calibration is specific to a single device. The device is calibrated before that it leaves
the factory. However, the calibration depends on the voltage (kV) and the current of the
generator, it is re-verified during installation. If the device works with a low energy, this
changes the calibration. The calibration is used to determine the atomic number and a
change in the energy results in a change in the calculation. Therefore, the XR3D must be
calibrated if the power is different from the factory. For example a change from 160 to 120
kV requires a new calibration at 120 kV.
Note: VOTI establishes default factory for the voltage and current settings. If other
parameters are used at the client site, the step wedge inspection must be repeated and the
XR3D must be recalibrated. The detectors used in XR3D-6 are insensitive to temperature
and are protected from environmental conditions, they therefore require no adjustment.
8. Record the result in the log book.
9. Repeat the scan of the step wedge placing the step wedge length-wise in the middle of the
conveyor belt and one time on the other side of the tunnel.
This placement ensures the entire width of the tunnel (therefore, the detectors) are used in
the calibration verification.
Note the image scan numbers. These are the scan numbers that would be loaded into the
Calibration application or saved as confirmation of the test.
