10 Respiration Monitoring
Warning:
The Respiration low rate alarm may be delayed up to 60 seconds
where there is a complete cessation of breathing by the patient.
Do not use this device as an apnea monitor.
Keep patients under close surveillance when monitoring
respiration. Do not rely entirely on the élance Vital Signs Monitor
respiration readings for patient assessment. If measured
waveforms are not appropriate readings, check the patient’s
condition.
Some rate adaptive implanted pacemakers alter their rate based
on the patient's Minute Volume. These pacemakers may
occasionally be confused by the signal that a patient monitor uses
to measure the patient's thoracic impedance (to determine
respiration rate). When this occurs, these pacemakers may begin
pacing at their maximum programmed rate. Turning the RESP
channel OFF can prevent this.

10.1 Physical Setup Connections
The respiration signal is acquired using the ECG electrodes, leads and cable. The
respiratory rate can be directly detected from the right arm (RA) and left leg (LL)
electrodes.
Respiration monitoring performance may be improved by the particular placement of
the right arm (RA) and left leg (LL) electrodes.
Refer to chapter on
ECG and Heart Rate Monitoring
for information regarding patient
connection and proper electrode placement.
