9. Why do the liners on ‘Dashboard’ go black?
If no data is received from a sensor within 30 seconds, the liner goes ‘black’. This is because there is
no sensor connected to that cylinder. On some engines, not all cylinders are fitted with sensors. The
cylinder count has to match the engine count to avoid confusion of data.
Alternatively, if data is expected on the cylinder sometimes the liner picture goes black. This is when
the data network is very busy, data packets are delayed for processing and the software, having not
received data from a sensor within 30 seconds thinks the sensor is off. This is more likely to occur
during manoeuvring as the sensors are all started together (5 min interval) at engine ‘on’. They will all
go for a measure - sending the ‘are you using air’ messages concurrently. This together with
measuring info, data packets and other traffic will mean that whilst all messages are processed (not
deleted) the some messages may be delayed for >30seconds. This issue grows with the number of
sensors – there are 14 on some vessels. The sensor values are still recorded, but briefly show as
being off. Once the engine has been running for some time (varying fill times) the sensors start to get
out of synchronisation and the problem of network traffic reduces.
10. What is the Inactivity Period?
Each sensor automatically cleans the pipe-work using the air 'blast' feature and this is used during the
measurement process. To safeguard against sensor blockages, each sensor automatically cleans
itself using the air 'blast' if no measurement has been taken during a six hour period - something
called the 'inactivity blast'.
The default Six hour period should be ample to allow the sensor to fill, whilst still preventing blockages
should only part of the sensor fill with oil. Experience has shown that it is prudent not to allow the oil to
stay in the sensor for too long - though this likely to amount to a day or so, not hours. A sensible time
for this 'inactivity blast' may extend to 8 or more hours, but some experimentation may be required.
