MENU 2 - POSITION
The unit must know the antenna's position (longitude, latitude, and elevation) before it
can obtain accurate time.
The unit is capable of automatically determining the antenna's position; however, to
speed up the synchronization process while operating in a stationary location, the user
can select the
Known
position solution mode and input the exact position of the
antenna (latitude, longitude, and elevation).
If the exact position of the antenna is not known, but the location is stationary, the user
can select the
Position Averaging
mode. The unit will determine the antenna's position
by averaging the position solution. After 86400 samples, the mode automatically
switches to the
Known
position mode, using the calculated refined position solution.
The unit needs to track a minimum of three satellites to operate in
Position Averaging
mode. Position solution data is only used when the GDOP is < 5.00.
Note: Timing accuracy will be degraded while operating in the
Position Averaging
mode
even if the antenna remains stationary. This is due to the fact that the GPS receiver
must not only compute time, but position as well.
The user can select the
Known
mode prior to the automatic switchover. However, this
could result in a less accurate antenna position solution, causing reduced accuracy of
the internal oscillator disciplining, frequency output, and timing output.
If the antenna is on a moving platform the unit
must
be operated in
Dynamic
mode.
Timing accuracy will be degraded in the
Dynamic
mode even if the antenna platform
remains stationary. The unit needs to track a minimum of three satellites to operate in
Dynamic
mode.
Note: When being used in a stationary location and the antenna's position is not
accurately known, it is recommended to use the
Position Averaging
mode. If the
position is accurately known, use the
Known
mode and the accurate position data.
