Position Average and GDOP Status
The status of the averaged position and the Geometric Dilution Of Precision (GDOP)
can be viewed as follows:
•
Press key 2 until Position Menu 2 of 2 is selected (
Position Average and
GDOP
).
GDOP:02.64 Averaging Mode:On 62440

The displayed position data (average latitude, longitude, and elevation) is active only
when the
Position Averaging
mode is selected as indicated by
On
and the Geometric
Dilution Of Precision (GDOP) is 5 or less. The number in the upper right hand corner of
the screen indicates the total number of samples used to calculate the displayed
position. After averaging 86400 samples, the mode status automatically changes to
Off
,
and the screen becomes inactive. The position mode (refer to paragraph 5.4.2.1)
automatically changes to
Known
.
GDOP
(Geometric Dilution of Precision) is a relative indication of degradation of
position and time accuracy due to satellite geometry. Lower numbers represent better
accuracy. Typically, the GDOP number is between 2 and 7. The best accuracy (lower
GDOP) results when the satellites are spread out across the sky. This is why it is
important that the antenna has a clear view of the entire sky.
For optimum time and frequency accuracy, the unit is normally configured to operate in
the
Known
position mode. When operating in the
Known
position mode no GDOP
computation is performed and the number is always displayed as 00.00.
