Lock Out/Tag Out
Turn off the machine to do maintenance or repair. Then before doing anything else,
“lock out” danger by making sure that the
machine cannot be accidentally turned on or
restarted. If a machine starts up or parts move unexpectedly, you or others could be
serious hurt- even killed. Proper lock out prevents accidents and saves lives. Shut off
and lock out electricity.
Lock out means putting a lock on the part of the machine that controls the energy. It
locks the energy control device in
an “OFF” position. This
prevents the machine from
starting up or releasing energy accidentally. Always lock out machine power whenever
possible. Only when one can not lock out does one use “tag out” –
a warning tag. Tags
do not lock out energy. Tags only provide a warning about dangers.
Never try to start machines or equipment that are locked or tagged out. Only the person
who performed the lockout/tag out can start machines or equipment that is locked
out/tagged out. Injury or death may result if someone other than the person who locket
out or tagged out the machine or equipment attempts to start it.
