Spread Spectrum Installation Guide
RTU Installation Verification
1. Each Pivot type that the FieldNET RTU can monitor has an installation kit
specific to that pivot, perform the following checks after installing the pivot
specific kit.
2. When first powered up the RTU will try to communicate to a Base RTU, either
directly or through a repeater. If the RTU can communicate with a Base RTU the
Mesh LED will momentarily turn ON after power up. If the Mesh LED does not
turn on after power up the RTU cannot communicate with a Base RTU and will
not be able to communicate with the web portal. Double check the hop pattern
selected and verify the antenna is securely connected. Verify the antenna is
aimed in the correct direction. If the RTU will still not Mesh refer to section 4.6
Verify/Modify Design or Appendix L Troubleshooting.
3. If the RTU has "Meshed" with a Base RTU after power up and the Base RTU
is connected to an operational Bridge the Device ID of the newly installed RTU
will be listed in the Device List. Once the newly installed RTU device ID is listed
on the web portal the installation has been successfully verified.
4. Signal strength is checked by pushing the Signal Strength Switch to place the
RTU in signal strength mode. The Signal
Strength LEDs will turn ON to indicate
the signal strength. The antenna can be adjusted to maximize the signal
received by the RTU. Press the Signal Strength Switch again to leave Signal
Strength Mode or unplug the RTU to remove power and then plug the RTU cable
back in.
Tips and Tricks
1. Use Google Earth or a hand held GPS device to aid in antenna orientation.
These tools can also be used to measure the distance between transmitters.
2. Configure the web portal to send text messages for any event. When a new
device is installed its operation will be confirmed when you receive a text
message. On the web portal click the Alerts tab then select User Setup and
check "Any Events".
3. Verify the RTU is sending information to the web portal before leaving the
installation site.
4. Record the GPS location of the FieldNET RTU.
