PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
STEERING DRIVELINE
The following are common torque specifictions for most steering drivelines:
• U-joint pinch bolt and
7
/
16
" locknut, lubricated, torque to 37 to 43lbft.
• Pitman arm clamp bolt and
3
/
4
" nut, phosphate and lightly oiled,
torque to 230 to 290lbft.
•
For off-highway vehicles, tighten the U-bolts after the first day or
two of operation. Then check weekly.
For your particular driveline, see the electronic Customised Kenworth
Maintenance Manual.
DRIVESHAFT
Greasable slip joints and universal joints of the drive shaft should be
lubricated periodically.
Use a good quality lithium-soap base or equivalent extreme pressure (E.P.)
grease: NLGI Grade 2.
For towing guidelines and returning a towed vehicle to service see page
163.
U-JOINTS
The slip joints and universal joints of the drive shaft should be lubricated
according to Recommended Maintenance Schedules, pages 315-342.
Use a good quality lithium-soap base or equivalent extreme pressure (E.P.)
grease: NLGI Grade 2.
Improper lubrication of U-joints can cause them to fail prematurely.
The driveshaft could separate from the vehicle and result in an injury
accident and/or vehicle damage. Make sure lubricant is purged at
all four ends of each U-joint and loosen caps if necessary. Also,
regularly inspect U-joints for excessive wear or movement and repair
or replace as necessary.
