Appendix 4
AIX
Advanced Interactive eXecutive. A version of the UNIX operating
system from IBM that runs on various IBM computers including
Mainframe systems.
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol. A protocol within TCP/IP networks
that allows a host to find the physical address of a node on the same
network. It is available in UNIX, Windows 95, Windows 98, and
Windows NT. ARP cannot be used across routers.
BINDERY
A Novell Netware database that allows the network administrator
to organize an operating environment based on the individual re-
quirements of, for example, users, groups, and workgroups,
BOOTP
BOOT Protocol. A TCP/IP protocol, used for downloading startup
information such as the IP address to hosts on the network. It is only
available in UNIX. BOOTP requires a BOOTP daemon on your
system. A request made to an active BOOTP daemon initiates a
search of the Boot Table for an entry matching the print server’s
Ethernet address. If a matching entry is found, the daemon down-
loads the IP address to the print server.
BSD
Berkeley Software Distribution. The University of California, Ber-
keley additions to the UNIX operating system.
Client-Server printing
One or several workstations shares a common printer via a net-
work. Print jobs are spooled on a server (e.g. one of the worksta-
tions).
Config file
This is a file that resides in the print server’s memory and contains
all the parameters that determine the EasyLAN 100i functionality.
By editing the config file (changing the parameter settings), you
can configure the EasyLAN 100i to meet the printing needs of your
network.
Daemon
Disk And Execution MONitor. A program that lies dormant waiting
for some condition to occur.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP is available in Win-
dows NT and UNIX systems, and allows for the automatic but tem-
porary assignment of IP addresses from a central pool. DHCP causes
the selected host to automatically allocate and download an unused
IP address to the requesting print server. It also provides validation
data that defines how long the IP addresses will remain valid. To
fully benefit from this method, the EasyLAN 100i also supports the
WINS host name resolution protocol, which is available in Win-
dows NT networks.
