Vehicle care 233
Note
• Do not connect directly to the
negative terminal of the battery,
as this could cause sparks.
• When making all connections,
ensure the jumper lead clamps
do not touch each other. Also,
ensure the jumper leads are not
on or near pulleys, fans or other
points that will move when the
engine is started.
10. Start the engine in the vehicle
with the charged battery and run
the engine at a moderate speed.
11. Then start the engine in the
vehicle with the flat battery.
Attempts to start the engine
with the flat battery should be
made at one minute intervals
and should not last longer than
15 seconds.
12. Allow both engines to idle for
approximately 3 minutes with the
leads still connected.
13. Leave the engine running while
removing the jumper leads in the
exact reverse order they were
installed.
While removing each clamp,
ensure they do not touch any
other metal while the other end
remains attached.
Towing a disabled vehicle
Proper lifting or towing equipment is
necessary when lifting or towing the
vehicle to prevent damage. State
and local laws must be followed.
Caution
Automatic transmission vehicles
must not be towed using the
towing eye. The vehicle’s drive
system could be severely
damaged. Use a flat-bed or
standard tow truck.
