• The shift lever must be in
P (Park) or N (Neutral). The
engine will not start in any other
position.
• The brake pedal must be
pressed to start the engine.

: (Lock/off).
When the ignition control knob is
in the lock position, some electrical
accessories and the engine are off.
The engine is automatically disabled
shortly after turning the ignition
control knob to the lock position.
The steering wheel is automatically
locked when the ignition control knob
is in the lock position.
To release the steering lock, turn
the ignition control knob towards the
front of the vehicle. If still locked,
turn the steering wheel slightly to the
right or left while turning the ignition
control knob towards the front of the
vehicle.

: (Accessories) When the ignition
control knob is in the accessories
position, the audio system will
operate.

: (On) When the ignition control
knob is in the on position, the engine
is ready to start and all electrical
systems are active.
Note
• Warning lamps will illuminate.
See Warning lights, gauges and
indicators on page 59.
• Do not leave the ignition control
knob in the on position for a
prolonged period, unless the
engine is running, otherwise the
vehicle battery will discharge.
• Diesel engine:

illuminates
until the diesel preheating (glow
plugs) system is ready. Once
!
extinguishes, turn the ignition
control knob to the start position.

: (Start) Petrol engine: Turn the
ignition control knob to the start
position momentarily and then
release.
The engine starts automatically.
Diesel engine: Turn the ignition
control knob to the on position
for preheating until the
K
light
extinguishes. Turn the ignition
control knob to the start position.
The ignition control knob
automatically returns to the on
position when released.
Note
• If the engine control knob
does not turn, push the knob
in and turn.
• If the transmitter is not in the
vehicle or there is interference,
Electronic Key Not Detected
is displayed. See Vehicle
messages on page 80.
