2.8 Debris Recovery System
Overview
The debris recovery system consists of a high per-
formance blower, vacuum hoses, separator, relief
valves and a debris cage. The system is powered
by the hydraulic system and main truck engine.
The blower creates vacuum in the separator, vac-
uum hoses & blasting head. A filter located in the
separator protects the blower, and flexible hoses
with quick disconnect fittings provide vacuum to
the blasting head.
The debris recovery system is required to meet
specifications on most water blasting projects.
Airport specifications require minimal foreign
objects or debris (FOD) after blasting due to the
possibility for removal projects to take place on
active taxiways and runways. On road construction
sites, debris recovery is required to remove excess
water and debris from the road surface to expedite
the repainting process. Paint crews are generally
on location to apply new line markings immedi-
ately following marking removal. Efficient debris
and water recovery quickly provides a clean, dry
road surface so new markings can be applied a
few minutes behind the blasting operation.
Proper Airflow And Safety Valves
The vacuum blower is driven by the hydraulic sys-
tem which is powered by the truck engine through
the PTO. Consequently the PTO must be engaged
and the truck engine set to maximum operating
RPM to provide proper system vacuum.
