3.7.1.1. Battery Backup Feature
The backup battery, shown in Figure 3-13 on page 3-13, is a 12
V

lead-acid rechargeable
battery. It is the power reserve for and uninterruptible power source (
UPS
) for the
RVM
Con-
troller. During the normal course of operation, the 12
V
power supply keeps the battery
charged. In the case that the
AC
Box loses power, the battery takes over through the following
process:
1.
When the 12
V
Power Supply loses
AC
power, it switches its output to the battery,
which sends power to the
DC
to
DC
converter.
2.
The
DC
to
DC
converter maintains 12
V
of output to the
PC
board, the display,
and the
MC
1,
MC
5, and
MD
5 controller boards.
3.
The
MC
5 board sends a signal to the
PC
to start its shutdown program. The
PC
starts its shutdown program after ten seconds. The shutdown process saves the
RVM
data, so there is not any loss of data.
4.
Even after the
PC
shuts down, the battery still provides power to the
PC
, the dis-
play, and the
MC
5/
MD
5 and
MD
1 circuit boards.

When
AC
power returns,
MC
5 checks to see if the
PC
is running by monitoring
bus communications. If
MC
5 does not see any communication on the bus, it
sends a signal to start the
PC
. M
C
5 tries to start the
PC
five times. If it fails on the
fifth attempt, it stops trying.
In the case of a prolonged power outage that runs the battery down to 11
V
, the display shows a
message indicating low
AC
power. Once the battery reaches 10
V
,
MC
5 turns the battery off in
order to protect it.
