Table of the corresponding a decimal number
and hexadecimal number
Hexadecimal numbers are described with “H”.
The address or size of the data value or exclusive message is described in hexadecimal
notation. The table of the corresponding decimal numbers and hexadecimal number as
follows:
*
The decimal notetion of such as the MIDI channel, Bank Select or Program Change, is
described as the number that is added 1 to the decimal number on the table above.
*
In hexadecimal notation every 7 bit, the value that is described as the data of 1 bite can
divide in 128 step at the maximum. For more resolusion, use data of more than one 1
bite. For example, the value that is described in hexadecemal notation of 2 bite data
every 7bit such as “aabb” is “aa x 128 + bb”.
Example 1: Decimal notation of “5AH”
“5AH” = 90 (from table above)
Example 2: Decimal notation of the value that is described in hexadecemal notation every
7bit of 2 bite data
12H = 18, 34H = 52 (from table above), 18 x 128 + 52
■
Examples of the MIDI message
Example 1: 92H 3EH 5F
“9n” is the Note ON status and “n” is the MIDI channel number.
2H = 2, 3EH =62, 5FH =95,
This is the Note On message of MIDI CH = 3, note number 62 (D4), velocity 95.
Example 2: CEH 49H
“CnH” is the Program change status and “n” is the MIDI channel number.
EH = 14, 49H =73,
This is the Program change message of MIDI CH = 15, Program number 74 (Flute for GS).
Example 3: EAH 00H 28H
“EnH” is the Pitch bend status and “n” is the MIDI channel number.
Second bite (00H = 0) is the lower bite of the pitch bend value and third bite (28h - 40) is the
higher bite of the pitch bend value. For pitch bend value, the value of 40H 00H (64 x 128 + 0
=8192) is regarded as 0. In this case, the pitch bend value is:
28H 00H - 40H 00H = 40 x 128 + 0 - (64 x 128 + 0) = 5120 - 8192 = -3072
When the pitch bend sensitivity is set to 2 and half notes, the value -8192 (00H 0H) varies
-200 cent of pitch. -200 x (-3072) /-8192 = -75
The message transmit the message of the pitch bend of -75 cent to MIDI CH = 11.
■
Exmaples of the exclusive message and
calculation of checksum
In the case of the exclusive messagge of Roland (RQ1, DT1), the message is transmitted with
checksum after the data to check if the message is received correctly. The checksum value
depends on the transmitted address, data or size of the exclusive message.
●
To calculate checksum
Hexadecimal numbers are described with “H”.
The checksum is the value that regard the value of the lower 7bit that is added address,
size and checksum value as 0. For example, when the exclusive message address that you
want transmit is “aaH bbH ccH“ and the data that you want transmit is “ddH eeH”,
aaH + bbH + ccH + ddH + eeH = total
Total / 128 = quotient ... rest
128 - rest = Checksum
Example: To assigne the Playback speed control to the Modulation of the Control change
(DT1)
The start address of the Playback speed control is “01H 10H 00H” and the parameter value
of the modulation of the Control change is “00H 01H”,
F0H 41H 10H

(9) EOX
Calculate checksum.
01H + 10H + 00H + 00H + 01H = 1 + 16 + 0 + 0 + 1 = 18 (sum)
18 (total) / 128 = 0 (quotient) ... 18 (rest)
Checksum = 128 - 18 (rest) = 110 = 6EH
The transmitted message is:
41H 10H 00H 5BH 12H 01H 10H 00H 00H 01H 6EH F7H
