2.
Position the patient’s finger into the sensor correctly:
•
Place an index finger over the sensor window with the fingertip against the stop.
•
Ensure that the fingernail tip does not extend over the finger stop. If necessary, trim the
patient’s
fingernail.
•
Spread open the rear tabs of the sensor to provide even force over the length of the pads.
•
Ensure that the position of the sensor is correct.
•
Correct or try a different finger other than index if needed.
•
If an index finger cannot be positioned correctly, or is not available, use a smaller finger, but do
not
use the sensor on a thumb, or toe, or across a child’s hand, or foot.
When selecting a sensor site, give priority to an extremity free of an arterial catheter, blood pressure
cuff, or intravascular infusion line.
2a. Orient the sensor as shown in the diagram.
2b. Position the cable along the top of the hand.
If the sensor is on and connected properly, proceed to step 4. If the sensor is not connected properly,
proceed to step 3.
3. If any of the situations described in this step occurs, reposition the sensor or choose an alternate
sensor for use on a different site.
