Example 3
In this example, the ANIM installed in slot 3 of the 9A686-04 is an ANIM-22/4. This ANIM
provides 4 OC-3 (155 Mbps) switched ports that use Category 5 UTP cabling. This ANIM is
used to connect 4 servers to the ATM backbone. Each Server has their own ATM NIC Card
that are connected to ports 1 through 4 of the ANIM-22/4. Each Server, however, have NIC
cards of various ages that support different versions of UNI Signalling. The Servers connected
to ports 1 and 4 can support UNI 3.0 or 3.1, therefore the devices have auto-negotiated to use
the highest level of UNI possible (3.1). The Server connected to port 2 can only support UNI
3.0, so the Signalling stack has automatically been set to this level. The Server connected to
port 3 has the newest NIC card and can support UNI 3.0, 3.1, or 4.0. The devices have
auto-negotiated to use the highest version supported (4.0). The Servers are ATM end-user
devices, therefore they maintain the User side of the Signalling stack, while the 9A686-04
supports the Network side.
Example 4
In this example, the ANIM installed in slot 4 of the 9A686-04 is an ANIM-31/2. This ANIM
provides 2 OC-12 (622 Mbps) switched ports that use multimode fiber optic cabling. Port 1 of
the ANIM-31/2 is used to connect to a second SmartSwitch 9500 system (direct connection to
another 9A686-04). Port 2 of this ANIM is used to connect to a third SmartSwitch 9500
system. All three SmartSwitch 9500s are using PNNI 1.0 for Signalling. The three
SmartSwitch 9500s have kept their default PNNI settings (as described in
Section 2.15
of
Chapter 2
). With the default PNNI settings, all three SmartSwitch 9500s automatically belong
to the same PNNI peer group.
NOTE
By default, all SmartSwitch 9500s that are physically connected use PNNI 1.0 for
Signalling. This includes all front panel connections to other SmartSwitch 9500s,
and all CTM backplane connections between 9A686-04s installed in the same
chassis.
The (H) and (L) in Example 4 of
Figure 3-1
indicated whether the node ID of each
SmartSwitch 9500 is (in a bitwise comparison) greater than(Higher) or less than
(Lower) than the adjacent PNNI Node.
