Chapter 5 — Troubleshooting
5-1
Introduction
This chapter provides information for troubleshooting the MG3702xA. The troubleshooting procedures
presented in this chapter support fault isolation to a replaceable subassembly or RF component. Remove and
replace procedures for the subassemblies and RF components are found in
. Required calibrations after assembly replacement are shown in
.
All replaceable parts and assemblies and their locations are listed in
Chapter 6, “Removal and Replacement
.
Ensure you are familiar with the information in
Chapter 1, “General Information”
before beginning any troubleshooting operations. Refer to important cautionary information in
Chapter 6, “Removal and Replacement Procedures”
before attempting to replace any internal items.
Unusual problems can often be caused by communication errors between external electronic equipment and
the synthesizer or by powering down improperly (ensure that the unit is not being powered down using the
rear panel switch).
Before attempting to troubleshoot any problem, disconnect all external equipment and perform a Master Reset:
1.
Press
System
key
2.
Press
Config
3.
Press the tab
Preset
4.
Locate Master Reset and then press
Reset
A cursory inspection of the instrument exterior may show the presence of problems such as a damaged RF
output connector, swapped side covers or other conditions causing reduced airflow, or evidence of the
instrument being dropped.
Note
Troubleshooting procedures presented in the this chapter may require the removal of the
instrument’s covers to gain access to the test points on the printed circuit boards and other
subassemblies.
Danger
Hazardous voltages are exposed inside the MG3702xA whenever the
power supply enclosure is open and the AC line power is connected. Turn
off the instrument and remove the line cord before removing the power
supply cover. Use extreme caution when troubleshooting with the power
supply cover removed and the unit energized.
Troubleshooting or repair procedures should only be performed by
qualified service personnel who are fully aware of the potential hazards.
Caution
ESD Requirements:
The MG3702xA contains components that can be easily damaged by
electrostatic discharge (ESD). An ESD safe work area and proper ESD handling procedures that
conform to ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999 or ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 is mandatory to avoid ESD damage
when handling subassemblies or components found in the MG3702xA instrument. Repair of damage
that is found to be caused by electrostatic discharge is not covered under warranty. Always observe
proper static-sensitive component handling precautions.
