MSH Management Module
LinkBuilder MSH token ring products may operate in either managed or
unmanaged environments. The MSH Management Module is a
mandatory requirement for a managed token ring system. Through
the management module you can communicate with RingBuilders,
MAUs and Bridges. It enables you to both monitor and control token
ring and Ethernet networks connected to the MSH chassis.
The MSH Management Module has a MAC device suitable only for
Ethernet. If your MSH network consists of Ethernet and token ring, the
management module can manage token ring products via Ethernet
using its own MAC device. However, if your MSH network only supports
token ring, the management module will need to manage over token
ring by sharing the RingBuilder’s MAC device. See
CAUTION:
Reconfiguring your token ring may cause loss of
communication between the management station and the LinkBuilder
MSH Chassis, if the RingBuilder is sharing its MAC with a management
module.
Other Token Ring Components
Token ring devices not resident in an MSH chassis may form part of a
token ring. These may be other MSH chassis, MAUs, Bridges and
Routers or token ring products from other suppliers which meet the
IEEE 802.5 standard.
Example Configurations
Figure 10-5 shows two RingBuilders, five MAUs and a management
module installed in an MSH chassis. RingBuilder1 and the five MAUs
operate as a single token ring. The second RingBuilder is currently
unused, but can be configured to operate a second ring, if traffic
demands.
