Chapter 3: Sonoma Mixer
93
step 1:
First ensure that you are monitoring the audio output of the mixer, and the mixer channel
inputs are fed from REC OUT. This will link the editor's playback with the automation,
and you will be able to hear the result.
step 2:
Find a timecode in the audio where you want to start inserting automation, and locate to it.
Set a marker at this timecode, so that you can locate back to it easily.
step 3:
Set up a static mix on the mixer: this will form the starting point from which automation
will be recorded. You can listen to the audio several times from the point you have
marked, to ensure you have a satisfactory initial mix.
step 4:
On the Automation panel, set the mode to 'TO END' and turn automation ON with the
ON/OFF button.
step 5:
Arm all of the automation controls by pressing the arm ALL button. Enable play on all
controls likewise by pressing the play ALL button. All of the faders and cut buttons should
be accompanied by small yellow indicators, to show that the controls are both armed and
playable. Now press Arm SELECT, left-click on a fader, and notice how its indicator turns
from yellow to blue to show that it is no longer armed. Left-click on it again to re-arm it,
and press SELECT to exit Arm SELECT mode.
step 6:
Locate back to the timecode you marked in step 2.
step 7:
Press PLAY – the timecode will start running.
step 8:
Try using the fader, for example, a long fade-out.
step 9:
STOP the playback, you could now UNDO the previous action, but instead let us locate
back to the original point and PLAY again. At the start of playback, the fader you moved
should return to its initial position, and then eventually fade out as you recorded.
step 10:
Repeat step 9, but this time, before the fader has reached the bottom, pull it back up with
the mouse. STOP the playback.
step 11:
You can now UNDO the previous action. If you do, then only the fade-out will be present.
If you do not UNDO, the next time you PLAY you will have the combination of the two
sets of control recording.
step 12:
Try pressing SAVE on the automation panel, and saving the data into a file. Then clear all
automation data with CLEAR ALL. After this, reload your automation data with LOAD.
