Input profiles and output profiles
Learn about output profiles
Input and output devices have their own colour spaces. The colour space of a device is the range
of colours it can reproduce. Display devices and scanners usually describe their colours in the
RGB colour space whereas printers use the CMYK colour space. A third colour space is necessary
to describe colours in a device-independent way. This the universal Profile Connection Space
(PCS) colour space defines colours as true representations of what the human eye can perceive.
When colour information goes from an input device to an output device, the input profile first
translates the source colour information towards the device-independent colour space. Then, the
output profile translates the colour information from the device-independent colour space to the
CMYK colour space of the printer.
Output profiles on PRISMAsync Print Server
An output profile belongs to a group of media with the same substrate properties. (
) All media print modes have a link to one of the available output
profiles. (
Edit a media print mode on page 196
) Media packs already have the correct output
profile. When media definitions change, a new output profile can be needed. You import the
output profiles into PRISMAsync Print Server.
You can create new output profiles with PRISMAprofiler.
Rendering intent
The output profile knows the range of colours (gamut) the printer can print and the print
behaviour of the media for which the colours are intended.
The
rendering intent
specifies the way how source colours are converted to output colours.
Source colours that fall outside the gamut of the printer are mapped to in-gamut colours, often
colours at the edge of the printer gamut. The output profile contains the gamut mapping strategy.
Separation
The process where the output profile converts the colours from the CIELAB colour space into the
CMYK colour space is called
separation
. The result of separation is the creation of the CMYK
separation planes.
The outcome of the separation is important for the quality of the printed image, since one target
colour in the device-independent colour space can be reproduced by different ink combinations
on the printer. To calculate the required CMYK values, the output profile takes into account which
limits are set for the media. For example, the total ink coverage limit and the maximum drop size
of the inks. Moreover, the output profile knows where CMY inks must be replaced by K ink and
how much ink must be used for the darkest black.
A CMYK colour value is often expressed as four percentages. Each C, M, Y and K colour channel
has the potential of printing at 100%.
