Chapter 1 - Overview

Interfacing 

The plug-in instruments are recessed behind the front panel, 
allowing room for wiring and connecting to an interface panel that 
can be placed inside the door. The GTXI’s front panel is hinged for 
easy access to the connectors on the boards. This panel can accept 
patch panels and ZIF connectors from sources such as Virginia 
Panel Corporation, MacPanel, ITT Cannon, and others. The bottom 
section of the GTXI (underneath the boards) is a cable tray for 
routing cables from rear to front and for connecting the interface to 
external instruments. 

The interface design can be an independent design or one of 
Geotest’s options (for example, the GTXI-750 Canon ITT based 
interface or the GTXI-760 Virginia Panel based interface). See 

Appendix D “GTXI-750 Cannon ITT Interface”

Appendix E 

“GTXI-760 Virginia Panel Interface”

 for further details on options. 

External Instrumentation 

The GTXI System can be expanded to control external instruments. 
Two RS-232C serial ports are available (one used for a mouse). In 
addition, an optional IEEE-488 (GPIB) or VXI-MXI interface board 
can be added to control other non-PC instruments. 

Cooling 

The GTXI uses a special mechanical design to provide proper 
ventilation for all boards. Two fans are used for cooling the power 
supplies while two other fans are used for cooling the 
instrumentation. The custom mechanical design of the GTXI 
provides for additional fans, which may be directed toward specific 
boards requiring special cooling. The GT7700 and GT7710 both 
offer optional top-mounted fans in 13 additional positions for 
exceptional cooling capability.
