CAN (CAT 5e)
The CAN port connects the Compact Engine to the control surface (via CAN bus).
For a stand-alone surface, use a single point-to-point connection. If the surface has more than one frame, then
you will need to daisy-chain the CAN Bus (as described
). The CAN bus can be hot-plugged, and so the
cabling can be performed while the components are powered.
All CAN bus connections must be point-to-point; a switch or hub is not allowed. Use a standard (straight 1:1)
network cable: STP-CAT 5e with RJ45 connectors. The maximum length of the CAN bus connection is 60
meters.
The port has two LEDs which indicate the following information.
LED Color, State

LED 2 (right)

RS-422 (serial)
The RS-422 serial port can be used for debugging or to connect remote devices which do not support TCP/IP
Ethernet. For example, to allow a legacy Radio Automation System to remotely control the system (via a Serial-
to-MIDI connection).
The connection uses a RS-422 9-pin D-type cable with RJ45 connector. The maximum cable length is 10
meters.
The port has two LEDs which indicate the following information.

MADI (optical)
The Compact Engine can be ordered with a choice of 0, 2 or 4 external MADI ports.
If you wish to fit a RAVENNA IO card to the left expansion slot and use all 64 streaming channels, then
MADI ports 1 and 2 are not available for external use.
The external MADI ports conform to AES10 and carry 64 bi-directional channels (at 48kHz).
The odd/even port pairs (1/2, 3/4) can be configured to operate as main and redundant connections. On the
input side, the system will switch automatically to the redundant port if the primary port fails. On the output side,
the two ports carry duplicate signals.
All MADI connections must be point-to-point. The maximum connection length depends on the fibre type. The
connectors are MT-RJ. Dust caps are supplied to protect the connectors.
By default, the MADI channels will be configured for stereo operation within the available sources
. This is
important to remember when assigning audio onto the 64 mono channels in the connecting device. For
example, the stereo source "MADI 2" will use the audio arriving on channels 3&4; the stereo output named
"MADI 3" will send audio out on channels 5&6; and so on.
