FID D0: Head-Actuator Assembly
This procedure uses a 2.5 mm Allen Wrench.
Removal of Head-Actuator Assembly:
ATTENTION
The head-actuator assembly and logic cards are ESD sensitive. Special care must be
used when handling ESD sensitive parts such as the head-actuator assembly to be sure
that no ESD damage occurs to the head you are removing or the head you are replacing.
See “Working with Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Parts” on page PROC-3 for details.
DO NOT USE ANY MAGNETIZED TOOLS ON OR NEAR THE HEAD ASSEMBLY (INCLUDING
THIN FILM CABLES). MAGNETIZED TOOLS WILL DAMAGE THE HEAD!
See Figure 317 on page APPENDD-14 and Figure 318 on page APPENDD-19 for the location of the
head-actuator assembly and associated FRUs.
To remove the head-actuator assembly, item

, follow the steps below if not done before:
1. Perform the prerequisite procedures for your 3570 model listed on Figure 316 on page APPENDD-13.
2. Perform removal of the “FID EA: Drive Logic Card” on page APPENDD-15.
3. Perform removal of the “FID EB: Drive Analog Card” on page APPENDD-18.

from the small rubber

Notes:
a. The order in which the head cables are removed should be maintained when they are re-installed.
The proper order to reinstall is:

b. The small rubber compression block, item

, located between the head-actuator assembly thin
film cables and the metallic shield, item

must go back in the same orientation that it was
removed. The rubber portion must be up, and the elongated hole must be to the rear of the
drive. as shown in Figure 318 on page APPENDD-19.
5. Remove the small rubber compression block, item

by pulling straight up.
6. Remove the metallic shield, that has plastic attached to the top side, item
7
and set aside for now.
7. Remove the small 2-wire cable from the drive servo card that goes to the head-actuator assembly.
8. Remove the small 8-wire flat cable from the drive servo card that goes to the head-actuator assembly.
9. Remove the 2.5 mm hex head screw (not shown) holding the head-actuator assembly to the bottom
plate. The hex head screw may be accessed through the hole on the bottom of the drive assembly
base. Carefully remove the head-actuator assembly as follows:
a. Slide the head-actuator assembly back toward the rear to clear the two locating pins.
b. The loader assembly contains an arm that engages with a slot on the cleaner brush portion of the
head actuator assembly. Rotate the loader assembly gears to move the arm so that it is moved to
its leftmost position. In this position, the pin on the arm will engage with the slot on the head
cleaner brush.
c. Next, slide the head-actuator assembly toward the mother board to clear the drive servo card.
