Operator Options menu by selecting
SERVICES, and then STATISTICS.

Too frequent clean requests may be caused
by too many errors occurring during R/W
operations. Ensure that the customer
cleaner cartridge is not worn out. If it has
not been replaced recently, you may want to
try cleaning the failing drive with a new
cleaner cartridge. If this does not fix the
problem, do the following:

Perform the following removal procedures:

1. “Decorative Cover—Drive-Only Models”

on page APPENDD-6.

2. “FID B2: Cooling Pack” on

page  APPENDD-11.

3. “Drive Assembly Top Cover” on

page  APPENDD-10.

Now replace the following FRUs in the
failing drive in the order listed:

1. Head-actuator assembly (30%) at “FID

D0: Head-Actuator Assembly” on
page  APPENDD-26.

2. Drive analog card (20%) at “FID EB:

Drive Analog Card” on
page  APPENDD-18.

3. Drive logic card (20%) at “FID EA: Drive

Logic Card” on page APPENDD-15.

4. Drive servo card (20%) at “FID EC:

Drive Servo Card and FID E9: Mother
Board” on page APPENDD-28.

5. Mother board (10%) at “FID E9: Mother

Board” on page APPENDD-29.

When complete, go to “Verify Fix” on
page PROC-7, then go to “End of Call” on
page  PROC-12.

If the Clean LED is ON solid, and the Busy and
Maintenance LEDs are OFF, the drive may have
been disabled due to lack of cleaning.

– Clean the drive with the cleaning cartridge.

Is the Clean LED still ON solid?
Yes  No

The problem was caused by failure to clean
the drive when the Clean LED was flashing.

There may be a failure to reset the Clean LED.
Power OFF then ON and observe the Clean LED.
It should switch ON solid, then switch OFF while
the drive microcode performs the power-on self
tests.

Does the Clean LED switch OFF after
switching ON for a short time during the
power-on cycle?
Yes  No

The Clean LED is ON solid. It may not be
getting a reset from the electronics.

Perform the following removal procedures:

1. “Decorative Cover—Drive-Only Models”

on page APPENDD-6.

2. “FID B2: Cooling Pack” on

page  APPENDD-11.

3. “Drive Assembly Top Cover” on

page  APPENDD-10.

Replace the following FRUs in the failing
drive in the order listed:

1. Drive LED card (30%) at “FID B1: Drive

LED Card” on page APPENDD-34.

2. Drive servo card (20%) at “FID EC:

Drive Servo Card and FID E9: Mother
Board” on page APPENDD-28.

3. Drive logic card (20%) at “FID EA: Drive

5. Drive sensor cable (10%) at “FID DA:

Drive Sensor Cable” on

The Clean LED does switch OFF. This is normal
operation. The LED is not ON solid at this time.
The problem may be intermittent. If the problem
comes back, do the following:
