Updating Microcode in Drive 2 from FMR Cartridge

If there is a mismatch in the microcode levels on tape drive 1 and tape drive 2, the microcode in tape
drive 2 cannot be updated using the process described in “Updating Microcode from FMR Cartridge
(Library Models)” on page PROC-34.

|

Note: The SCSI address for drive 2 is sometimes changed during this procedure because when drive 2

|

powers up, and drive 1 does not attempt communications (which will always happen in this

|

procedure because drive 1 is not connected), a 5 minute timer is started by the microcode. After 5

|

minutes has elapsed, the drive will reset itself, and become a Model C00. A Model C00 uses the

|

SCSI ID switch to determine the SCSI address, while the library models use VPD in the logic card

|

to determine the SCSI address. Unless the switch setting is identical to the VPD address, the SCSI

|

address will change. If the FMR process is completed in the 5 minute window, the address will not

|

change. In any case, after the code is updated and both drives 1 and 2 are powered on, drive 2

|

will convert back to a library model, and will use VPD to determine the SCSI address.

|

Before returning the library to the customer, use the operator menus to verify that the SCSI

|

address for drive 2 is set correctly.

In order to update the microcode in drive 2, perform the following:

1. Switch off power to the 3570.

2. Remove the power cord from the power supply above drive 1. Be sure to leave the power cord

plugged into the power supply above drive 2.

3. Switch on power to the 3570. The library will not move and the operator panel will not display any

information because these items are controlled by drive 1 (which is not powered on at this time).

4. Perform the procedure described in “Updating Microcode from FMR Cartridge (Drive-Only Models)” on

page PROC-37 to load the microcode on drive 2.

5. Switch off power to the 3570.

6. Reconnect the power cord to the power supply above drive 1. Be sure to leave the power cord

plugged into the power supply above drive 2.

7. Switch on power to the 3570.

8. If updating the microcode in tape drive 1, refer to “Updating Microcode from FMR Cartridge (Library

Models)” on page PROC-34.
