Lighting strikes
People who are on board or around a machine which is struck by lightning are exposed to
dangerous voltage levels which may cause injury or even death.
The vulnerability of the machine to lightning strikes depends on the following factors:
-
maximum height above ground
-
presence of tall metallic structures near the machine
-
presence of bodies of water near the machine (rivers, lakes)
When it appears that thunderstorms are approaching, and until the danger has passed, some
measures are necessary to prevent the risk of electrocution:
-
place the mast in a horizontal position
-
stop the engine
-
personnel must move away from the machine and from any other metallic object, and
seek shelter in a safe location
Lightning may also cause severe damage to the machine. If the machine has been struck by
lighting or if this is suspected, it must be carefully inspected for possible damage.
-
check operation of the electrical system and the electronic control system
-
check the condition of the mechanical elements (the most exposed parts are the pins for
mast connection and the boom joint)
The machine is not equipped with protection against lighting strikes. The worksite manager
must take measures to prevent the risk of electrocution:
-
evaluate the risk of electrocution caused by lighting;
-
place lighting rods as required to cover the work area.
