WIRE ROPE CHECK
All visible parts of the rope must be inspected daily to detect general deterioration and
deformation.
Pay special attention to points at which the rope is attached to the equipment.
Any perceptible or suspected variation in the condition of the rope must be officially noted and
followed up with a check on the condition of the rope by a qualified person.
Periodic checks must be made by skilled personnel.
To determine the frequency of periodic checks, it is necessary to comply with the provisions of
the following list:
-
check current legal requirements on application in the country of use;
-
identify the type of unit and the ambient conditions in which the unit operates;
-
identify the classification group of the unit
-
consider the results of the previous checks;
-
consider the period of time for which the rope has been in use.
The decision to renew ropes must be based on the number and position of broken wires, the
degree of overall wear and the presence and extent of corrosion.
The rope must be replaced when it present the following conditions:
-
the overall diameter is 10% less than the diameter as new, at any point along the length
of the rope.
-
when a strand is completely broken, or damaged in such a way as to reduce the effective
section by 40% at any point.
-
the rope has dents, twists or permanent bends caused by damage or by pressing against
sharp edges.
-
the core comes out of the rope, even in a single point;
-
when one or more strands are slack and protruding, even though the rope is taut.
