Glossary

RS-232C

A standard interface that is used to connect
computers, or computers and peripheral
devices for data exchange. This interface is
approved by Electronic Industries Associa-
tion (EIA), and is adopted in most PCs as a
general input/output serial interface.

SCF (System Control Facility)

Dedicated circuitry (including an independent
CPU, the Service Processor) on the system
board that provides unified monitoring and
control of the status of cooling fans, power
supplies, other system components and
peripheral devices.

SCSI (Small Computer Systems

Interface)

A fast, 8-bit parallel, ANSI standard I/O bus
that can be used to connect up to 8 peripheral
devices (hard disks, CD-ROM drives, MO
drives, etc.) to a computer.

SCSI ID #

A unique address (0-7) assigned to each device
on the SCSI bus.

Service Processor

The independent CPU that monitors the system
and supplies diagnostic functions, as part of the
SCF.

SMP (Symmetrical Multi-

Processing)

A common method for using multiple
processors together in a basically identical
fashion.

Ultra SCSI

An implementation of SCSI-3 that is twice as
fast as FastSCSI.

UPA

Ultra Port Architecture. Interconnection
based on the crossbar method, packet
exchange type for controlling of various data
transmissions within a system among proces-
sors, memories, graphics, I/O, networks and
so on.

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

An energy storage device that is able to con-
tinue supplying the rated power for the rated
time if the normal AC power supply is inter-
rupted.

way

A unit of storage that is accessible
independently in interleaves in main storage
unit. Using the set associative method in buffer
storage, this is a unit of split mapping.
