Switch Unit Redundancy

8665 Smart Router provides two slots for the switch units. With one switch unit the network element
is not redundant in terms of traf

c switching. With two switch units the network element is fully

redundant on the data and control plane switching. Also traf

fi

c is load shared to both switch units to

enhance the QoS behavior and reduce switchover time in case of failure.

The following terminology is used in connection with redundancy.

refers to the card with the higher slot number.

Protecting

refers to the card with the lower slot number.

Dynamic terms:

Active

refers to the card or interface actually doing its task.
