3.2 Linking Epica Using a Media Converter
An Epica enclosure can be linked to enclosures with Ethernet 10Base-T connectors
(e.g., Optima and Precis 500 MHz) by using a Media converter.
Cable Length Requirements
Network Segment
Cable Type
Maximum Distance
Epica to Media Converter
RG-58
500 ft. (152 m)
Media Converter to Optima or
Precis 500 MHz
Straight-through patch cable
330 ft. (100 m)
Important:
Always attach 50-ohm termination connectors to the open ends of the
T-connectors on the Media Converter
and
on the last enclosure on the coax cable
run in multi-enclosure systems.
To link an Epica enclosure to an Optima or Precis 500 MHz:
1. Fasten a T-connector to the Epica’s Ethernet (BNC) port and another
T-connector to the Media Converter.
2. Fasten one end of the RG-58 coax cable onto the Epica’s T-connector.
3. Fasten the other end of the RG-58 coax cable to the Media Converter’s
T-connector.
4. Fasten a 50-ohm termination connector to the open ends of both T-connectors
(see Figure 9).
5. Insert the RJ-45 connector from one end of the straight-through patch cable
into the Media Converter’s 10/100 (RJ-45) port.
6. Insert the connector on the other end of the straight-through patch cable into
the 10/100 (RJ-45) port on the Optima (or Precis 500 MHz).
When power is applied, the Communication Status Indicator on the CPU blinks
green (see page 6-2).
